The 3 Key Components for Designing Promotional Print

It is no secret that today’s audience and markets are filled with consumers who love to look at beautiful things: visual cues draw the eye and entice customers, that’s a fact. Targeted campaigns and inventive designs are crucial to the success of your brand, so collaboration with professional designers to make your vision come to life is a must.

If you are running a business or promoting an event, you should consider printing new flyers, advertising through posters, and giving out brochures for your business. You should be aware of the key components that go into designing promotional prints before you do so: there’s a whole list of variables that influence the way your design comes to print. These features are outlined below, and knowing them will optimise your brand’s publicity.

Print Design 101: The Bleed

An example of utilising all three components - bleed so the print extends to the edge, sufficient margins around the design itself, and high resolution imagery.

One of the most important questions to ask about your printed image is whether it should extend all the way to the edge of the paper — this is known as bleed. If you want your images to extend all the way to the edge the page, they will need to be printed at a slightly larger size so that the excess can be clipped off to create a full bleed appearance. Our in-house designers at Absolute Creative Print are only too happy to go through bleed margin requirements as required, either over e-mail or during a personal consultation.

Print Design 101: Resolution

Resolution is vital to the print process — it’s easy to forget that what looks fine on screen may not be the same result when it emerges from the printer, and this is what our design and production team look out for. Our designers file-check every image that comes through the door to ensure you get the perfect print each time, and they will always inform you if a certain element is going to be low resolution. There are many steps to combat a low resolution issue —  it could be the way the file is saved (ie: always save as a 300dpi PDF where possible and avoid JPEGs!), or it could even be the software itself. Our team are always on hand to answer your questions on resolution, big or small.

Print Design 101: Margins

It is advisable that plenty of space is left around your design to protect it from being cut into during the finishing process. We ensure that there is at least a 5mm border between any text and the edge of a page, just to be safe. We believe in a close collaborative effort between us and you, making an effort to liaise throughout the proofing stage to get your promotional material just right.

We’re proud of the unique rapport we build with clients that come to us from a range of commercial and individual backgrounds.
